Tiffany Patterson

M.A, C.C.C

My treatment approach guides people through a self-examination into how they experience themselves, their relationships and their world. Symptoms are relieved through increased personal insight and finding new ways of perceiving old situations, allowing for the development of healthier behaviours. I view the therapist-client relationship as truly unique — one that can help, in a lasting way,to heal and steer personal relationships.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapist of Ontario and registered as Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. I hold a Masters of Counselling and Spirituality from Saint Paul University and an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Carleton University. I am also certified in Object Relations Therapy and Self Psychology.

I have been practicing for 5 years, working with two family health teams and now in private practice. My theoretical approach is psychodynamic, which aims to explore various conscious and unconscious mental or emotional processes with the understanding that they influence personality, behavior, and attitudes. My approach places emphasis on experiencing affect, exploring the past, looking for patterns, increasing self-awareness and attention to the therapeutic relationship.

Depression

We all feel down sometimes but when you are experiencing depression, these periods feel overwhelming and intolerable. The broad tent of symptoms includes feelings of sadness, loss, melancholy, boredom, frustration, irritability, fear and hopelessness. When these feelings persist, they often start a vicious cycle of negativity, withdrawal, demoralization and increased self-criticism.

Obsessional-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

It is common, on occasion, to go back and check if the oven is still on or if the iron is unplugged. But you may be struggling with obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviour if you have irresistible, repetitive, intrusive thoughts or powerful urges compelling you to repeat ritualistic behaviour (i.e cleaning or checking). These thoughts and behaviours interfere with daily routine, job performance and/or social relationships..

Anxiety

Anxiety and fear are normal responses experienced by all. But if our response is out of proportion to what we are dealing with or if there is no real threat, this can interfere with daily life and dramatically impact our quality of being. Symptoms may include restlessness, tiredness, shakiness, muscle tension, palpitations, shortness of breath, dry mouth, trouble swallowing, nausea, diarrhea, feeling constantly on edge, concentration difficulties, trouble falling or staying asleep, and a general state of irritability.

Panic Attack and Panic Disorder

In many cases, panic attacks happen without any warning. The reason for the attack can often be deeper and more complicated than what is taking place in that moment. Symptoms can include shallow breathing, sweating, racing or pounding heart, dizziness, trembling, chest tightness, fear of dying or losing control and/or nausea. These symptoms, and the fear they instil, can lead to avoiding certain activities or places.

Trauma

Experiencing something outside the realm of normal — something that threatens your sense of safety and well-being — can result in emotional responses such as fear, helplessness and powerlessness. You might relive the trauma through flashbacks, dreams and other forms of re-experiencing. The past trauma can also lead to mistrust of others, difficulty in close relationships, self-esteem and identity issues, and a loss of autonomy and competence. It is also common to avoid certain trauma-related thoughts, feelings or conversations and/or to experience intense distress if exposed to reminders of the traumatic event.
